We sat down with Viktor "sdy" Orudzhev after Spirit eliminated BIG from the Champions Cup Finals to discuss the series, which included a closesly-contested third map, and their next matchup against Hard Legion.

Spirit edged past BIG following a 19-15 overtime win on the third map of Group B's elimination match, with sdy and co. now set to face off against Hard Legion in a rematch of their opening round encounter for a spot in the semi-finals.

Spirit are on the brink of the playoffs after defeating BIG

In the interview, the Ukrainian player discussed Spirit's close matchup with BIG, their initial encounter with Hard Legion and how the team will fare against them in a rematch in Group B's decider game.

You played against Hard Legion in your opening match, a CIS derby in which you narrowly fell short of victory at 14-16 on Train. What made Hard Legion such a difficult opponent to play against?

To be honest, our Train is not the best map. At that moment, we had a bad map pool because they play Train and we don't that much. We had to play it, we were forced to, because it was their pick. But now we will fix it and it will be a much better map for us, for sure.

Did you make any changes after the loss against Hard Legion, or were you confident in your playstyle going into your next matchup against BIG in the Group B elimination game?

We went over our Train after the Hard Legion game, so we were confident if they picked it; but on the whole, in the big picture, we didn't change a lot. We only changed mental things like hyping up magixx because he is playing really well right now.

Let’s talk more about your game with BIG. You came out of the gates hot on Dust2 with a dominant T side, winning the majority of duels in the process. Was it part of your game plan to play such a heads-up style of Counter-Strike where you looked for a lot of duels?

It's our playstyle. We have some rounds where we play fast and some not, but we also have everything and pick tactics one by one. You need to know when it works for you and when it doesn't, so we mix it up.

Moving on to Nuke, you guys don’t have a great record on the map in the past three months. Have you practised it much recently or did you go into this map with little practice?

We are really happy with our Nuke and after losing to BIG on it we will make it even stronger. We will watch the demo and fix the mistakes, I think it will be really good in the future.

The deciding map was Mirage, which, in contrast to Nuke, you have a fantastic record on. Were you confident going into Mirage that you would win the series on this map?

Of course, you always have to be confident going into the game otherwise you will just lose it (laughs). So we went in ready to win.

What about when BIG forced overtime when you were 15-10 up? Were you still feeling confident you could close the map out?

Yeah, because our coach said we need to play our own game and not do things like we did when we were losing rounds. We just stuck to our game plan and won it.

Next up you have a rematch against Hard Legion in Group B’s decider match, what are your thoughts on playing them again? Do you feel like you can beat them swiftly this time around or will it be another close game?

Yes, as I said, we go into our games feeling really confident and we are confident we can beat them this time. I hope we can beat them quickly and we will try everything we can to do this.
